Take your halloween game up a notch this year with help from the talented folks at Embodyment - hair and make up make the difference between a good costume and a great one.
Might be time to change up your hair color at Embodyment this fall with one of our color specialist? But first, a few fun facts about hair colors.
Even though only two percent of people in the world are natural blondes, that doesn't mean it's not popular. One in three women dye their locks light enough to be blonde in the United States. Many children born with blonde hair go dark before their tenth birthday, thanks to rising levels of eumelanin, a natural pigment that regulates the darkness of hair strands.
The red color of hair was given to us by Neanderthals. Science has shown that it is a result of mutation of a gene in chromosome 16, MC1R. It has always had significant standing in society. In Europe, red hair color is valued and respected. Nearly 10% people in Scotland and England have red hair color. Although no proper explanation is available for this, many believe that bees are more likely to sting redheads. Redheads have their own annual festival called Roodharigendag (in Dutch). It takes place in Breda, The Netherlands, and it is attended by thousands of people with natural red hair.
Brown hair is universally the most common hair color. Eumelanin (as we talked about before) is a type of pigment, and how much you have is determined by your family history. The more eumelanin you have, the darker your shade of hair. Brunettes are more likely to have a difficult experience when quitting smoking. Melanin prevents their liver from metabolizing (or breaking down) nicotine in a timely manner. And the longer nicotine stays in your system, the more likely you are to get addicted.
“But when fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous ass as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you.” -Stephen King
This fall we will see a major shoulder season - and that isn't referring to the weather. Off the shoulder tops and large statement necklaces are here so that means additional attention must be paid to shoulders, chest and back complexion.

Women’s magazines all spread the same message: Money may not buy you happiness, but beauty certainly will. A new study has actually proven that the women’s magazines were right — so long as you live in the city.

Let's face it, New Orleans is not Scottsdale or Vegas. The humidity for half of the year affects how many of us feel about our hair. Maintain your style all summer long regardless of humidity with keratin treatments.
Keratin treatments fill in the porosity of your hair, as overly-porous hair causes tangles, frizz, and breakage. Your hair is made up of keratin, so the treatment is putting the protein back into the hair, which is often lost due to age and chemical services. Keratin allows you to cut down on blow drying time by around half as well as decreasing the need for flat ironing, mitigating a lot of the heat damage.
Makeup artistry involves much more than how a person looks. It is based in how a person feels. Through enhancement and transformation of our appearance we can improve the way we see ourselves as well as how we feel overall.
Midori Tajiri-Byrd provides makeup services for photography, special events, weddings and lessons for individuals and groups and is available in salon or on location.
What is the one product you would bring to a desert island that you cannot live without?
Sun protection is imperative on a desert island! I cannot imagine leaving my house without proper solar defense much less enjoying a beautiful island without it. A vitamin c serum would be another important product. Vitamin C is a power house ingredient which prevents sun and pollution damage as well as making the sun protection more effective.
What would we find in your purse right now for health and beauty?
In my purse I have lip balm with SPF to prevent dehydration and collagen deterioration. I also have a cuticle balm for my hands. Your hands can tattle tale your age and lifestyle. In a pinch, the balm can tame fuzzy hair. Hand sanitizer is always with me!
What is your favorite treatment you provide at Embodyment?
The Embodyment Custom Facial is a result driven skin treatment. I love to recommend this treatment because it allows me to consult with my clients and address their specific skin needs.
Summer is here - any tips on how to decrease the oil on our face from this humidity?
Many lotions and sun protections contain micro-sponges to absorb excess oil production throughout the day. A Salicylic gel under daily lotions and sun protection will regulate oil production and prevent blackhead build-up. Clay-based masks are a refreshing and clarifying way to keep your skin healthy during the hot summer months.
What is your favorite music to listen to when you want to relax?
I am a classically trained violinist so I enjoy the soothing melody of strings. My favorite music to play in my treatment room is The Sound Health Series which has several CDs that stimulate relaxation and de-stressing.
What are your thoughts on who makes the best sunscreen?
The brand of sun protection is not as important as the ingredients. You want to look forbroad spectrum protection. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are the best UVA blockers. In the past these ingredients have been thick and pasty but ingredient technology has come along way. Glo-Therapeutics has effective, user friendly sun protection. I especially like their tinted SPF. This is a hydrator, solar defense, and sheer makeup coverage in one. Perfect for the summer months!
What are your favorite snacks that promote healthy skin?
An important part of our custom facials is education. I enjoy correcting skin care myths and showing my clients the best path for a successful skin care routine. Diet can play a huge role in healthy skin. Probiotics aid in the digestive process and help create a beautiful complexion. Any snack that contains probiotics (yogurt), antioxidants (blueberries) and essential minerals (leafy greens) allows your skin to be the best it can be. Sugary sodas are the worst!
Party Season is upon us (we are sure you have noticed). The Loft @ Embodyment Salon & Spa is the perfect place to cozy up with girl friends and prepare for the next wedding or formal engagement. Hair, makeup, manicures, pedicures, facials... we have you covered!

With 14 years of experience under his belt, Tommy Centanni is the newest member of the Embodyment family. A local native, Tommy enjoys all that New Orleans has to offer and is excited to start this new chapter in his life. We sat down with Tommy for a short interview to ask him a few questions about his life and how he came to join us at Embodyment Salon & Spa.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised right here on the West Bank in Harvey. I love New Orleans’ diverse culture and friendly people. There is never a dull moment around here!
How did you get started being a stylist?
Ever since I was a child, I wanted to become a stylist. It has been a lifelong passion for me.
Why did you come to Embodyment Salon & Spa?
Several of my clients suggested Embodyment to me! With my attention to detail and dedication to my clients, they thought I would be a good match with the salon.
How do you think Embodyment is different from other salons?
The atmosphere for both guests and stylists is what really sets Embodyment apart. The stylists here are an amazing team, and they are always willing to collaborate together to make sure each and every guest is happy. It is really a positive experience.
What is your beauty philosophy?
My philosophy of being a stylist is actually very conservative. I truly enjoy my clients and want to go the extra mile to make them happy.
What are a few of the highlights of your career so far?
I consider myself blessed that I have had many highlights in my career! I have been privileged to style many celebrities in my work which is quite thrilling. I also hold a special place in my heart for brides and bridal parties. Making them feel special on their spectacular day gives me a sense of pride in my work.
How was 2013 for you? What do you hope 2014 will bring?
I have dealt with a lot of loss in 2013. The past year has been very challenging for me, personally. I lost my mother, which was heartbreaking for me. My father, who grieved for her until his death, passed away shortly after. I also lost my sister-in-law. This all happened within a 4 month period, so it was all very difficult. 2013 was very trying, but I want this year, 2014, to be about rebuilding myself and my esteem.
Do you have any personal or professional goals?
Despite the darkness of the last year, this year has reinvigorated me with new and wonderful excitement! I just joined Embodyment Salon & Spa, and I am concentrating on continuing to learn and grow with the many talented stylists here. I love making people feel beautiful and special, so I am looking forward to meeting many new clients and sharing my passion with them.
What are you reading/watching/listening to these days?
I love all the awards shows that tend to happen at the beginning of the year. I love to see what celebrities are wearing and how they are styled so I can keep up with current trends. I am most looking forward to the Golden Globes, the Oscars, the VMAs and the People’s Choice Awards!
Who is your role model personally and professionally? Why?
In my personal life, I find a role model in Daniel Thibodeaux, who has been my main motivator in getting fit.
In my career, my role model is Vidal Sassoon, whom we all know. I also look up to my past mentors that helped me build my career during my time at Aveda: Michael Barnette, Heidi Fisher, David Ginkens, Chris Guidry. I would not be here would it not be for David Falcon, who convinced me to go to beauty school. I also appreciate all of my educators who helped me develop my skills as a stylist. Lastly, I admire my parents, whose memory I will keep alive and whom I miss dearly.
With the start of the New Year, we look forward to great things from Tommy Centanni! It is our pleasure to welcome him to Embodyment Salon & Spa, where we hope he will find a creative and supportive family. We invite you to call or come by the salon to book an appointment and experience for yourself his talent and passion!

Fall is in full swing and we’re all getting ready for the holiday season. Make sure you’re looking your best by starting at the very top…of your head that is! The summer was fun, but it’s left us with faded color, neglected highlights and roots itching for attention. Give your hair the gift of color and check out a few trends we think are going to be very “present” this season.
Ombre to Sombre
If we had to pick a hair trend to represent 2013, we’d definitely pick the ombre. A gradient lightening (or darkening) of hair from roots to tips, this color technique popped up everywhere and has created a life of it’s own. If you’re still in love with the effect but are looking for a change for the holidays, get to Embodyment Salon and turn your ombre into a sombre. Sombre is ombre’s sexy yet sophisticated cousin. It uses the same technique, but where the ombres of the summer tended to be higher contrast with various color levels, the sombre is a more natural graduation of color, keeping the tips only a few shades lighter than the roots. This subtle change gives you a warm glow, much needed for the cooler weather.
For the darker haired ladies, think color in chocolate shades of brunette for the holidays. Chocolate brown is a warm shade that works as a great alternative to harsher black-browns. It compliments any skin tone and is sure to draw attention to your eyes. All-over color is a great way to bring your hair back to life after a summer in the sun, and existing light pieces can mix with the color to create a multidimensional look.
Are you the type that likes to rock your natural hair color? We think that’s fantastic! Natural hair color sometimes works better for you than any from a bottle. But all that time spent with the same shade can leave you longing for a little more excitement. Give your natural locks a little pick-me-up in the form of chunk highlights. Ask your stylist to hand paint variously placed or scattered streaks in your hair starting fine at the root and getting thicker towards the tips. This technique takes a bolder approach than typical highlights and the effect it will have on your hair will be just enough to transform without taking over.
A Case of the Reds.
It’s never a surprise when a new crop of red heads pop up during the fall and winter seasons. Going red is a festive way to get in the holiday spirit and give you that extra va-va-voom on top. There’s a shade to compliment any skin tone and different levels depending on your hair’s original color. Think dark plums and deep auburns for the dark haired ladies, copper reds and strawberry blondes for those starting off with lighter locks. Once you add this fiery shade to your do, we promise you’ll notice more heads turning your way.

It’s that time of year again; Fall Facial Time! The leaves are beginning to turn, the air is getting crisper and you can almost feel the colder weather on its way. Fall is the season sandwiched between lazy summer beach days and crazy holiday schedules. Having endured the long hot and humid summer our skin has been subject to the blistering sun, the pool and ocean salts, long hot sweaty days and the drying effect of air conditioning. So what better time to schedule a facial!

With the changing of the weather, women often decide to change hair color. We couldn’t be more on board. We love to change with the seasons and this fall there are several dynamite Fall hair color trends for a fresh look!
Vivacious copper tones were all over the runaways and in magazines. These colors add richness and depth to your hair and are worn by stars like Julia Roberts and Kate Blanchet. These colors do need maintenance and are best suited to a paler skin tone.
Another hot color right now is honey blonde. You can see this color on the likes of Jennifer Lopez and the newly blonde Kim Kardashian. This color makes a great transition from the platinum blonde you like to sport in the summer. This hue can be tailored to suit almost any skin tone.
If you love to go dark for fall, Demi Lovato and Zooey Deschanel are rocking the most beautiful and rich chocolate browns. This color looks good on almost anyone and can really brighten your skin and eyes.
So, what color is right for you? The first thing to do is schedule an appointment with your hair stylist. There are many things to consider and he/she will help you determine what will work best for your lifestyle.
Skin tone may be the most important factor to consider. Your colorist will help you determine whether your skin has warm, cool or neutral undertones.
Once your stylist determines your skin tone, choosing a color is much easier. These are our most basic tips:
- Never go lighter than your skin tone
- If you have pink skin, stick to ash tones to neutralize your coloring
- If you have dark skin, stick with brighter colors to avoid looking washed out
- Yellow hues in your skin makes yellow, gold and orange tones difficult to wear
Making a change is fun and can really update your look. Try to resist the urge to do it on your own; box color can often look flat and become dull quickly. Along with high quality products, your Embodyment stylist will use appropriate color and chemical formulas to ensure long lasting shine as well as healthiness of hair. Even us stylists would not go it alone! Talk to your stylist about options for fall hair color trends that will work best for you. Happy coloring!
As always, Embodyment Salon & Spa will be happy to give you a color consult for free! Call us today to book your appointment. 504.891.4440
